Thoughts of an Unconventional Counter-Culturalist

"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Just Here, I Suppose

Well, I’ve taken quite the hiatus from Tumblr due to the fact that I wanted time to just think (about nothing, yet everything) and also I wasn’t sure if Tumblr was still something I wanted to invest my time in; however, I’ve decided that Tumblr is still a community I would like to be a part of. I love Tumblr for remaining to be the loyal outlet that has enabled me to pour out my sentiments to those who are willing to read them.

At the moment, I do not have anything too serious to discuss. Well, actually, I do have things that I would like to share with you, but I’m really not in the state of mind nor the mood to discuss anything too thought provoking. I’m keeping this post rather light today, but I’ll make sure to make up for it in my next post. Today is after all Friday, but instead of going out I’ve decided to get Chinese take-out with my bestfriend and my sister, go for a stroll with my (toddler) siblings, update Tumblr, and then watch as much of The Big Bang Theory as my eyes can allow. Well, I think this a wrap for today. It’s an odd way to end, but I suppose you can relate it to my lack of effort I’ve put in for today. You’ll have to forgive me.

Anonymous asked: how do you feel about the phrase "carpe diem" ? could you in any sense relate it to the counter-culturalist movement?

Carpe Diem. I’m really fond of that phrase because I think I would like to “seize the day” more often than I currently do. In fact, I wish I could seize the day everyday, but you and I know how impractical that would be. In terms of the counter-culturalist movement, well in my perspective, I believe the movement’s objective is more exemplified by the phrase “capere vitae” (take/seize life) as opposed to the mere cliche phrase of “carpe diem.” It’s about reviving a dull generation of lifeless zombies.

Really good question—in fact, one of the best yet. I suggest if you’re interested in the ideology of a carpe diem society I suggest you read The Chosen by Chaim Potok. It’s wonderful and may change your outlook on life.

Anonymous asked: I really like your blog, but all I see are posts about how people should think for themselves or stand up for themselves. Honestly, it's all very neutral, and doesn't really reflect how you, yourself are counter culture. A helpful suggestion is, if you really want today's youth to think about important issues, post articles or questions about issues. Give today's teens something to think about, not just tell them to think. just a friendly suggestion though :)

Thank you! I appreciate your suggestion! :) I was planning to do that after I wrote a few posts clarifying my objective, but I’ve been fairly busy lately so I haven’t had time to really post a mind-provoking issue. However, I have a ton of stuff I would like to get out there on my blog, but I’ll have to wait until I get a bit of spare time. Thank you again.

Anonymous asked: I read your blog and it seems intriguing :) Some of your views are very interesting. I was just curious, what are your thoughts on same sex marriage? And how are you a counterculture in real life, not just on the Internet? In other words, how do you put your words into action?

Thank you. I really appreciate it. I’ve had such conflicting views regarding same sex marriage. At this point, I’m decently nonchalant about it, but because of my spiritual background I do not support it. However, if America wants to continue using the term “free” the way it has been doing for over the past decade, then gay marriage should be legalized from that stance. I don’t think this really just applies to marriage, but in general everyone should be given the same rights, despite differences. In terms of expressing my counter-culturalist views, I’m really not afraid to voice my opinion and actually turn my words into action. One example: I’ve always been big on books. When I was younger the library was my second home. Some time last year I realized that a majority of my generation has pushed books aside and has ignored the flourishing power of words. With this realization I was prompted to launch a small non-profit organization that donates books to the homeless youth of my area. My objective is to encourage these kids of my generation to develop a voice. Words are powerful and I want to share this power with a portion of my society.

What I want to do as a counter-culturalist is to just change the minds of the youth today. I’m tired of hearing ignorant comments. I honestly just want to curb a majority of this ignorance and turn it into comprehensible opinions.

Anonymous asked: As a person, who inspires you?

This is such a difficult question. I think I have a long list of people who give me inspiration, but I must say my parents are rather inspirational. I just have a lot of everyday people who inspire me. Inspiration doesn’t always come from the great; it also comes from the wise.
